GA Liberal - Part 10 of 10
March 3, 2009
There has been frequent talk of a “brain-train” that will connect Atlanta to Athens. With President Obama promising an increase in “infrastructure spending,” would you try to secure any of that money to help fund a brain-train and bring jobs to ACC?
President Obama has proposed an increase in infrastructure spending and I believe that further examination of the “brain-train” is certainly necessary; however, at this point in time it is too early to make a clear decision regarding the allocation of the proposed increase of infrastructure spending.
Before expending extensive amounts of time and resources on any plan, we must take a look at all of our options, including the list of shovel-ready projects already submitted to President Obama, and determine which would benefit Athens-Clarke County in the short-term and in the future.
From an economic development perspective, the “brian-train” could significantly improve our local business growth, as well as provide jobs for many of our residents. With knowledge of the possible benefits a commuter train would bring to Athens, it should not be overlooked.
How will you help bridge the gap between the University, its students, and employees and the rest of the ACC community?
A united community is necessary for a successful community. I want to bring everyone to the table, listen to their opinions, hear their needs, and together work towards solutions that will serve the greater good of Athens. Increasing committee growth allows for more opportunities for the citizens of Athens-Clarke County to take part in their local government. I am a firm believer in the equality of opportunity, and I know that without the help of the entire community, important issues will go unanswered. If we all work together, college students, business owners, employees, and city hall, we can increase the chances of developing effective solutions to tackle the difficult issues.
I will work hard to encourage students to engage in issues that they are passionate about. If more students come together in support of a cause to speak out and let their voices be heard, the community of Athens will be able to better understand the concerns of the student population, resulting in the increased possibility of reaching common ground.
