With the economy in hard times, what can ACC do to help decrease unemployment in the local area?
There are a variety of reasons and economical theories that are believed to cause unemployment. A hard-hit economy can completely destroy a city, state, or even an entire country.
There are many ways to help decrease unemployment such as strengthening our local partnerships. I will continue to meet with concerned citizens, local groups, the Clarke County School board, local college administrations, and the Chamber of Commerce in search of opportunities to strengthen our foundation and increase job security.
Responsible spending strengthens the public’s confidence in the government. Confidence is the first step in economical growth, without it people hold onto what they have in these hard times in fear of losing it all. Confidence promotes consumer spending. Consumer spending increases business growth. Business growth demonstrates that the economy is on its way up and success is a possibility again. This process becomes a repeating cycle that continuously stimulates growth and development making Athens a place of opportunity.
Responsible spending is something that everyone talks about, but is rarely implemented in society, as the public is uninformed of where their tax dollars are being spent. An unaccountable government leads to unnecessary spending that only satisfies the ideas and opinions of those in charge, destroying the trust and confidence in the government, which reverses the cycle of business prosperity and leads to the unemployment and poverty that affects Athens today.
The policy of transparency results in an informed public, which can easily eliminate the possibility of wasted resources that do not benefit the community. The resources that were previously allocated for “waste,” should be put towards increasing Athens’ opportunistic appeal, such as fiscal incentives for new business owners as well as those that are already here.
With the economy in the shape it is currently in, getting a loan to open a new business, or a loan to help remain in business, is nearly impossible. Very few people have the resources to start a business, and those that do have the resources lack the confidence to risk it in a failing economy.
By implementing incentive programs for new business owners stimulates the confidence and trust in the government that is the necessary backbone of economic success. Current business owners would also benefit from the programs as many are struggling to stay open, resulting in job lay-offs. One form of an incentive for both new and current businesses would come from promoting environmentally friendly business practices such as eliminating wasteful use of water, electricity, and recycling.
Decreasing the unemployment rate does not have a single answer, but by increasing the confidence of the citizens, and advocating the many attractive qualities that Athens has to offer will bring new businesses, and therefore more jobs. Owning a business in Athens comes with recognition, and this is one key aspect that we must use to our advantage.
