GA Liberal - Part 6 of 10
March 3, 2009
One of your campaign promises is to have a transparent government. What would you do to increase the transparency of the ACC government?
I have promised to assist in improving the transparency of our local government for nearly a year now. I stand firm on the concept of transparency because of the positive effects it can have on a community. The elimination of wasteful spending provides relief to the city budget by saving money that can be put towards business growth and development. An open, transparent government allows citizens to see where the government is spending money, and it gives them an opportunity to become involved in the process of improving our society.
There is a modern movement of government and it delivers a very strong message: the people are tired of government spending their tax dollars, their hardworking money, recklessly. The citizens of Athens work very hard for their money and have a right to expect that their tax dollars will be spent wisely and appropriately.
I strongly support the use of technology, such as open system management via the Internet, for budget and fiscal transparency. Using the Internet to record the Athens-Clarke County budget, revenue, and expenditures, will increase liability and proficiency of the government to restore confidence in our taxpayers.
Athens has been headed in the right directions towards a transparent government for many years. The enactment of broadcasting weekly meetings and allowing citizen input is a great leap in comparison to our “past time local government.” I will continue to build onto these policies, and increase the amount of time that I work alongside the citizens.
