How do you propose working in the community to decrease the number of dropouts in the ACC Educational System?
The Athens-Clarke County Board of Education is an independently elected body that is separate from the Mayor and Commission, and prior to the 2002 Mayoral election, there had never been a meeting conducted between the School Board and the Mayor and Commission. If elected, I will continue to advocate formal meetings between the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission and the Clarke County Board of Education. By continuing these regularly scheduled meetings, we can continue to seek more effective solutions that will encourage students to complete their education.
History has shown that the dominant majority of high school dropouts face difficulty finding employment and often cannot afford to feed their families. While decreasing the current drop out rate, we should also focus on helping those who did not finish high school to reach their potential, thus resulting in positive role models for today’s youth.. Providing initiatives to help encourage those citizens to complete their G.E.D will enable them to become a competitive entity in our local workforce. Many of those citizens were probably told that a college degree is necessary for success in society, leading them to the conclusion that if they were not going to college then why finish high school. We must promote the idea of self-improvement in the students, giving them the confidence to set and achieve their goals.
