Public safety…

My administration will make public safety a top priority and will work to ensure the safety of the student community, business sector, neighborhoods, and visitors. The police, sheriff, and fire departments all play a substantial role in protecting the safety of Athens-Clarke County and its residents.

The first step is to ensure that our public safety departments are provided with the necessary tools, resources, and education to protect the citizens. I will continue to support a strong partnership with the Chief of Police, local police officers, Sheriff, Fire Chief, judges, and citizen-based committees, working together to make Athens a safer community.

If elected, I will be a proponent for the creation of a sensible, strategic plan to reduce crime. Demographically studying the vulnerability, areas of occurrence, and identifying the types of crimes being committed we can focus our resources where they need to be, taking criminals off the streets and out of our neighborhoods.

Pedestrian safety is an issue that has been talked about by local officials for many years. Our downtown area attracts visitors from all over the state of Georgia for many different reasons such as collegiate game days, professional conferences and meetings, and to enjoy Athens’ nightlife. Large amounts of people in one area tend to decrease awareness of our surroundings, resulting in unnecessary, avoidable accidents. I will continue to support funding that will improve pedestrian sidewalks, crosswalks, and other safety measures to better protect our citizens and visitors.
