Mayoral candidate Brandon Shinholser attended Georgia's 13th annual Outdoor Classroom Symposium on October 30th at Chase Street Elementary School. The annual event seeks to educate individuals on the environment and its extraordinary uses. This year’s theme was “Growing Fertile Minds,” which was used in training sessions to teach the importance of school gardens, how to start farm-to-school programs, and how to use your school grounds to enhance cross-curricular learning.
Brandon attended the event with Equilibrium Earth, an environmental non-profit organization focused on improving the lives of others through recycling, growing food, and teaching others how to do the same. Brandon joined Equilibrium Earth by advocating the use of raised beds - a simple concept that helps others to grow their own food - and greenhouses. “It is important that we focus on teaching others how to be more independent. I would like to see programs like this established in our school systems nationwide, and implemented in jails, prisons, and rehabilitative facilities,” says Brandon.
Andrew Watts, a Brandon for Athens campaign advisor, also attended the event to advocate for Equilibrium Earth. “I think Equilibrium Earth and all the other organizations represented here today are doing great work toward improving the interface between the natural and built environment. I believe that we need to see much more environmental education in our schools, especially in urban and suburban areas, and projects like greenhouses and raised beds are a great way to educate kids about the environment, while also giving them a fun activity and allowing them to make a difference in their lives and their community.”
Among training sessions, organizations and individuals were allowed to set-up projects in poster board style up and down the hallways of Chase Street Elementary. Events such as the Outdoor Class Symposium allow for individuals to learn, educate others, and network toward expanding education.
