Congratulations, Kasim Reed!
12-11-2009
On December 2, 2009, the citizens of Atlanta made clear their decision of who they believed could move their city forward.
I would like to congratulate Kasim Reed on his victory and achievement of becoming the 59th Mayor-Elect of Atlanta. Based on his record, I believe that Kasim will serve as a strong leader and ambassador for the people of Atlanta, and I give my best wishes toward his efforts of promoting progress.
Like me, Kasim pledged to fight for job growth and opportunity, crime reduction and neighborhood protection, transportation, and accountability at City Hall. He did not begin his campaign as a frontrunner; nor did he ever appear to be the candidate who would eventually be victorious. He kept the faith that when all was said and done, his hard work and sacrifice would ultimately lead to positive results. Kasim recruited a strong campaign committee, including help from some of the most talented consultants in America, and they never stopped short of their ambitions.
Now, my campaign and I look forward to our own election, which is less than one-year away. It is up to us, the people, to make sure that we put Georgia back on track by electing leaders who never stop short of seeking improvement. I have continually stated my interest in working closely with neighboring communities to strengthen regional partnerships that can lead to substantial job growth in our area. Atlanta may be counties away, but it is important that the next Mayor of Athens addresses regional cooperation on relevant issues, such as transportation. I would like to ask the same cooperation and progressive attitude of Kasim Reed.
I would also like to congratulate the other candidates for their hard-fought battle. Their faces will not disappear from the political arena because of their loss; they are leaders, and they will have a large impact on the lives of many citizens across our state in the years to come.
Once again, congratulations to both Kasim and his campaign committee for all they have achieved.
