Sunday Afternoon Ice-cream and Activism
September 13, 2009
If you walked past Ben and Jerry's on Sunday afternoon, you were likely to see a fairly large line of ice-cream lovers, primarily honoring a recent ad campaign. Ben and Jerry's decided to change the name of a popular selection, "Chubby-Hubby", to "Hubby-Hubby" during the month of September to celebrate the legalization of Gay Marriage in Vermont. For the past week, GA Liberal and Gay in Athens have worked together to host an event honoring the ice-cream company for their progressive approach on Gay Marriage. Most supporters feel that the issue is not taken as serious as it should be, especially in a red-leaning state such as Georgia.
Athenians are never shy when it comes to expressing their stance on issues that are dear to them, regardless of demographics. Activism pumps through the blood of our citizens and we wouldn't like it any other way.
Athens is a city that shines in Georgia for many different reasons, and we have to continue to lead by example if we want to see any form of change. During my seventeen-months on the campaign trail, I have seen many groups peacefully promoting awareness of their cause. Occasionally, I would see a few hecklers at rallies and events, but they would only linger around for a short time. The volunteers in these groups understand that not everyone will agree wholeheartedly with their opinions, but a disagreement does not stop their drive, nor drain their ambition; these are the values that have defined our city. Activism is an important part of our democracy that allows the citizens to "place the ball in their court." Community organizing and activism are two of the most powerful tools that we can use to change our community into what we would like it to be.
As a citizen and candidate for Mayor, I will continue to stand up with our community to promote important, progressive issues.
