I began my mayoral campaign to send the message that we, the people of Athens, have a responsibility to ourselves and each other to do what we believe is right and within our power. The ultimate goal should always be to move our city forward for our current generation and for those to come.
This journey began two years ago in April 2008. On a platform of open and transparent government, crime reduction, and job growth, we built a strong, grassroots campaign with several volunteers, and earned the support of many voters along the way.
Today, I am announcing that I will be suspending my campaign for Mayor of Athens-Clarke County. Though I am stepping aside as a candidate, I will continue my involvement with the citizens of Athens, and will do my best to make sure that the right candidate is selected in November.
My voice will not be become a quiet echo in the background of this race.
I am proud of my committee members, who have worked hard and selflessly to spread the word about my candidacy and the issues. I am eternally thankful for the number of individuals that pledged to vote for us in November, and those who contributed their hard earned dollars to my campaign.
With this being said, I hope that you understand, and respect my decision to end my run to be your next mayor.
After today, I look forward to helping Athens select the best candidate for mayor on November 2, 2010. At this time, I will not be giving my support to a single candidate; however, I will announce my endorsement within the next two weeks.
Thank you for your everlasting and loyal support.
For The People,
Brandon L. Shinholser
