Brandon Shinholser's Response to the Shooting Incident
April 25, 2009
A dark cloud has fallen over the city of Athens, our normally activist and peace-willed community. On what is generally one of the most celebratory weekends in the life of Athens, George Zinkhan, a professor at the University of Georgia, pulled the trigger against three beloved members of the Town and Gown Theater Troupe of Athens. As the authorities search areas where the professor may be hiding, we become aware that even though we may spend a lot of time around an individual, we are incapable of predicting their potential to commit a dangerous, senseless act of violence. We all need to be alert because at any given moment, anything can happen.
The Athens-Clarke County police department deserves commendation for their rapid response in arriving and controlling the scene of this tragic event. I am also being told that the University of Georgia emergency response alert system successfully notified the students, which proves the power of new technology when it comes to alerting a large group of citizens to take cover during unanticipated, potentially harmful situations.
As citizens, we must remain observant in watching for the suspect and immediately notify the authorities if he is spotted. Also, contact the Athens-Clarke County police department if you have any other information pertaining to this tragic crime. I encourage everyone to say a prayer for the entire city of Athens. May God be with the victims, their families, and the individuals that witnessed this atrocious act.
