In the coming months, we mayoral candidates will step up and qualify to run for Mayor of Athens. And in four days, we will step up to the plate as we attend the second forum of the election season.
I am the longest-standing candidate in this race. I have walked along many of the roads that we pass by on a daily basis. I have spoken to many residents of this city, most of whom have expressed their belief that local government could be doing a better job at improving our community.
There were no blinding revelations rising out of these conversations. The openness of our citizens helped me to understand their situations and recurring dissatisfaction with local government and to understand more about what I need to do if elected in November. More importantly, they expressed concerns that need to be handled by whoever is elected in November.
The people of Athens are like the many throughout our nation who are struggling and demanding a new way of doing things. They want a leader who will put his or her foot down and demand that we work to bring more jobs to Athens. They believe that their kids deserve a genuinely good education. They believe that their property tax should be fair and just, and they want to be safe from criminals-especially those who commit crimes against innocent, decent people and are allowed to walk free the next day.
A lot of people would tell these citizens that they expect too much, but I disagree. I see these issues as common sense, and so do they. We all know that government cannot solve all of our problems-but I believe that with a change of priorities, we can improve this community, and I will continue to run on this notion.
I would like to invite everyone to attend mayoral forum on Saturday, April 10, hosted by Common Ground. I would also like to say thanks to Common Ground, and encourage those who attend the event on Saturday to donate a few dollars to their cause, even if all you can give is one dollar; anything helps. These hard working ladies and gentlemen are some of most dedicated in our community, hosting the only events that give the citizens a chance to become familiar with those who are vying to become the next Mayor of Athens. Come out and show your support for your favorite candidate, and more importantly, listen to what we have to say. There are some big differences between those of us who are running for Mayor and I’m not just talking about age, despite popular belief-I’m talking about fundamental values.
For the people,
Brandon Shinholser
