As a candidate for Mayor of Athens-Clarke County, I would like announce my support for the recently proposed TNR program that is scheduled to be voted upon by the Mayor and Commission on March 2nd. TNR stands for “trap, neuter, and release,” for those of you who may have missed the recent discussion that has spread around Athens-Clarke County.

The TNR program is designed to trap cats that are considered “feral,” and provide spay or neuter services and vaccinations to these animals before releasing them back into the wild.

Among others, this proposal is aimed at controlling the long term population growth of feral cats by preventing reproduction, as well as controlling the spread of disease by providing vaccinations. This program cannot be one-hundred percent effective; however, I applaud our city’s efforts to find a long term solution by approaching the issue proactively. I am an animal rights activist myself, and believe that it is far more practical to seek solutions rather than simply euthanizing our furry friends.

I urge all citizens, for or against the proposal, to contact your commissioner to discuss how they plan to vote. To view the actual proposal, click here.
