A New Beginning - The Athens-Clarke County Department of Cultural Affairs
01-18-2010

The culture of Athens stems from the greatness of our people, by whom it was created with both voice and action. For many decades, the music and arts communities have flourished, bringing thousands of visitors and local enthusiasts to the streets to show their appreciation of what we have to offer in Athens. Not only has the culture of Athens served as one of the greatest forms of entertainment in the state of Georgia, but it has also served our community as an economic driver.

The entertainment culture contributes hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to our local economy. Our culture also helps to create a brand identity that brings tourist to our city, as well as giving Athens a distinct reputation of success in building a strong, vibrant community of creative spirit.

As Mayor, I will build upon my vision of a stronger Athens by working to intertwine the culture of Athens into as many areas of civic life as possible. I will provide funding and leadership to promote our culture in the most productive ways possible. I will work with the Commission to create an Athens-Clarke County Department of Cultural Affairs, pursuant to their authority to create new departments under Section 2-105(d) of the Charter. As Mayor, I will place legislation to create the department on the Commission agenda and recommend passage, pursuant to my authority under Sections 3-104(c) and (j) of the Charter. The purpose of the newly created department is to build upon the greatness of our culturally-inspired community featured in arts, music, and theatre, as well as to foster economic growth throughout the county.

In the coming weeks, I will provide to the public a thorough and systematic plan for harnessing success in this objective, as well as what results to expect if I am elected and this plan is enacted. The link to that plan will be located on the issues page of my campaign website.

The contributions of Athenians to arts and music have been enormous and cannot be underestimated. While some may see my stance on the establishment of a new department less important during an ailing economy, I see it as an effort to revitalize and expand, as well as a way to give credit to those who have contributed so much to our community.

I welcome anyone to contact me or my staff to discuss our plan of action to move Athens forward by email or phone. A directory of contact information is located on our website at
