Lowry will not run for office in 2010
01-05-2010

The Brandon for Athens Committee collected documents from the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections in December and discovered in the process that Commissioner Doug Lowry had officially filed paperwork to accept campaign contributions for a campaign for Mayor.

“Although Doug’s candidacy was just a rumor, the fact that he filed legal paperwork with the Board of Elections gave us the go-ahead to make the story public,” said Brandon.

It was confirmed that Lowry would not be running, despite his filing to the contrary, by GA Liberal’s editor, Dustin Baker, and Beyond the Trestle’s Johnathan McGinty on Tuesday, January 5, after the Brandon for Athens Committee sent out a press release that included a copy of Lowry’s Form DOI. McGinty included on his blog:

“Athens-Clarke County District One Commissioner Doug Lowry just confirmed that he will not seek the mayoral office in 2010 and that he intends to serve out the remainder of his term on the Athens-Clarke County Commission before moving to Calgary.”

“All in all, we set out to get the truth from Commissioner Lowry without slinging any mud” said Brandon. “The press release was meant to draw attention to the fact that a commissioner had entered the race; that’s big news.”

”When the rumors of a Lowry campaign were brought to our attention, followed by uncovering his Form DOI, we felt that it would be appropriate to reach out to Commissioner Lowry to find out if he was really planning to run,” Shinholser campaign manager Andrew Watts said Tuesday. “We’d also like to thank Dustin Baker and Johnathan McGinty for their prompt work helping us uncover the truth,” Watts said.

The Brandon for Athens Committee wishes Commissioner Lowry the best in his future and thanks him for his dedicated service to moving Athens forward since 2007.
