The majority of Athenians who reside in District 1 cast their votes for Doug Lowry during his run for Commission in 2006. According to official paperwork filed at the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections office, Doug Lowry has his eyes set on a new office in 2010: Mayor.

Though it is not required, Lowry has not affirmatively sent out a press release to advise the citizens of Athens-Clarke County that he intends to run for Mayor; this despite filing his intent to accept contributions 17 days ago on December 18, 2009. One might question what reasons, planned or unplanned, that an established individual such as Lowry might have that he would choose to postpone telling the 1,977 citizens who voted for him in 2006 that he has already taken step one in exploring a run for Mayor. The truth is that by filing his intent to raise funds, Lowry has moved past subtle rumors and into legal exploration of the office.

In an open letter to Commissioner Lowry, I have asked him provide the public with answers pertaining to filing a Form DOI with the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections, and his response should make clear his future aspirations and vision for Athens-Clarke County. His reply will be openly posted online.

I hope that upcoming candidates will openly engage with the citizens of Athens if they choose to run for office, regardless of the position. The citizens have eight months before returning to the polls to elect a new leader to replace term-limited Heidi Davison, and it is important that candidates give the people a chance to get to know them instead of waiting until the last minute.

OPEN LETTER

Commissioner Doug Lowry,

This is an open letter coming from me not only as an established candidate in the race for Mayor, but also as a concerned citizen. I have noticed that you filed your formal declaration of intention to accept campaign contributions with the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections on December 18, 2009. In the box labeled “municipal,” you have written in “Mayor of Athens-Clarke.” As of now, there are no media relations, or personal declarations from you or your future campaign, stating that you are even exploring running for the office of Mayor of Athens-Clarke County.

I appreciate your service as you have served on the Athens-Clarke County Commission since 2007. However, I strongly believe that it is both vital for openness and transparency, as well respectful that you alert the citizens of Athens, especially the 1,977 voters who elected you to serve as a commissioner, if you intend on exploring a run for the office of Mayor.

My ultimate questions for you, Commissioner Lowry, are a) are your future aspirations aligned with running for Mayor of Athens-Clarke County? b) If so, what is your vision for moving our city forward? I look forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.

Regards,
Brandon Shinholser
